Throughout 2007 there will be a national programme of events to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of Transatlantic Slave Trade (TST). This commemorative date provides an invaluable opportunity for Birmingham Museum to explore the issues surrounding TST and to show how the story of slavery and its abolition touch the lives of all British people, no matter who we are and where we live.

‘The Equiano Project’, which celebrates the life and times of the 18th Century writer and campaigner Olaudah Equiano runs from 2006 until 2008. The programme of work will be multimedia and multidisciplinary, and will consist of exhibitions, educational resources, events and a project website.

The main exhibition will take place in Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery’s ‘Gas Hall’ in September 2007. The exhibition will be the flagship event for the Equiano Project in particular, and the West Midlands region’s recognition of the 2007 Bicentennial in general.
