This book has been written by Dr Malcolm Dick, a lecturer at Birmingham University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning, to provide an accessible introduction to the history of the city for adults and children

This large format full-colour publication explores the evolution of Birmingham’s physical landscape, the development of local industry and the contribution of people from different religious and ethnic communities.

The text, amongst other things, looks at the role of well-known people such as Matthew Boulton, Joseph Chamberlain and Alex Issigonis as well as lesser- known women and men who have contributed to Birmingham’s history.

Illustrations have been taken from paintings, prints and photographs from the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Many of these images have not been published before.
